New Chief of Police Appointed in Deming
DEMING – Starting July 1st, Deming will officially welcome Sergio Lara as the new Chief of Police. Chief Lara, previously serving as Administrative First Lieutenant, steps in following the retirement of the former chief. Interim Police Chief Jose Montoya will return to his role as Patrol Captain.
The Deming Police Department, comprising 39 sworn officers, includes specialized units such as the Criminal Investigations Division led by Lieutenant James Fetrow and Detectives Amanda Chavez, Gerardo Rico, Ashley Standridge, and Ralph Parra. Support staff includes four Animal Control/Code Enforcement Officers and a four-person office team.
The department features a 10-person Special Response Team (SRT) with four Crisis Negotiators, handling high-risk situations like warrant services and hostage scenarios. The SRT receives necessary equipment and an annual clothing allowance. Additionally, the department operates a bicycle team for day and night patrols, a K-9 unit, and School Resource Officers.
Under Chief Lara’s leadership, the department aims to enhance public safety and community trust, leveraging its diverse and specialized units.
