DEMING – The Wildcat football team is set to showcase their hard work tonight in a controlled scrimmage against the Carlsbad High Cavemen at Deming High School Memorial Football Stadium. The action kicks off at 5 p.m., with fans eagerly anticipating a glimpse of what the upcoming season may hold.
The Carlsbad Cavemen, who compete at the Class 6A level in New Mexico High School Football, are coming off a challenging 2023 season with a 2-8 overall record and a 1-4 mark in league play. Despite last year’s struggles, the Cavemen bring a wealth of experience to the field, with 18 seniors returning to their roster.
The Wildcats, on the other hand, enjoyed a successful 2023 campaign, finishing 9-4 overall, capturing the District 5A championship, and advancing to the Class 5A semifinals. With 15 seniors returning, including a formidable offensive line and a strong core of skill position players, the Wildcats are poised for another strong season.
Head Coach Richard Perales emphasized the importance of tonight’s scrimmage, stating, “We want to take a good look at our base offense and a little run-pass-option on the deep plays.” The scrimmage will start with Deming’s number one offense running 15 plays, followed by the number one defense for another 15 plays. The second team will also see action before the teams compete in a live quarter.
There is no admission fee for tonight’s scrimmage, and the public is invited to come out and support the Wildcats as they prepare for the season ahead.
