WNMU President Shepard to Step into Faculty Role

SILVER CITY, NM— The Board of Regents for Western New Mexico University convened recently to address the contract of President Dr. Joseph Shepard. During the meeting, Dr. Shepard announced plans to step down from his role as president effective January 15, 2025.

Citing concerns about media attention affecting the university’s progress, Dr. Shepard emphasized that the decision was made in the best interest of students and faculty. After 13 years of leadership, he will transition to a faculty position in the School of Business while retaining the title of President Emeritus.

The board expressed gratitude for Dr. Shepard’s service, highlighting significant advancements during his tenure. Discussions are underway to appoint an interim leader to ensure continuity.
