DEMING – Western New Mexico University is asking the state Legislature for $8 million in capital outlay funds to support the construction of a new facility for the New Mexico Center of Excellence for Early Childhood Education. The center is dedicated to training early childhood educators and expanding access to quality education for young children.
The new facility, planned for university-owned land behind St. Mary’s Academy in Silver City, would allow for the expansion of pre-K programs and student services. At 12,500 square feet, the building will include five classrooms, a kitchen, administrative offices, and a reception area, along with outdoor learning and play spaces. In line with WNMU’s sustainability goals, it will be powered by rooftop solar panels.
Dr. Cindy Martinez, Dean of the College of Education, in a news release told KDEM News that the current Child Development Center is at capacity, and space constraints will only increase as state regulations lower teacher-to-child ratios. “By ensuring that more children have access to quality education, it contributes to giving them a strong foundation for future academic and social success,” she said.
The new center will also serve as a training site for WNMU students in early childhood education, mental health, nursing, and occupational therapy. Martinez emphasized that the facility will enhance community engagement by offering space for workshops, gatherings, and professional development events.
With a statewide focus, WNMU hopes the project will support early childhood education not just in Silver City but across New Mexico. Lawmakers will decide on the funding request during the current legislative session.
