DEMING – Authorities are investigating an apparent murder-suicide that occurred Thursday, April 10, at a residence on Northeast Cibecue Road in Luna County.
According to the Luna County Sheriff’s Department, ADT Security contacted Central Dispatch requesting medical assistance at the residence. Emergency medical personnel were dispatched and arrived to find a violent scene already unfolding.
Upon arrival, local paramedics witnessed an elderly man fatally shoot an elderly woman in the doorway of the home using a .308 caliber rifle. The paramedics immediately radioed Central Dispatch. Responding units from the Luna County Sheriff’s Department and the New Mexico State Police arrived shortly afterward and found both the man and woman deceased.
Investigators believe the incident began as a domestic violence situation that escalated into a murder-suicide. Inside the home, law enforcement found signs of a struggle, including blood splatter and overturned furniture and belongings.
The Office of the Medical Investigator and the New Mexico State Police Crime Unit were called to the scene. The rifle believed to have been used in the incident was recovered, and investigators say the man apparently took his own life using the same weapon.
Names of the deceased are being withheld pending notification of next of kin, who authorities have not yet been able to locate.
The bodies were released to the Office of the Medical Investigator. Meanwhile, local paramedics who responded to the scene have been offered counseling services due to the traumatic nature of the incident.
