DEMING – An early morning officer-involved shooting in Las Cruces left one man dead and another with non-life-threatening injuries Thursday, prompting a multi-agency investigation.
The incident occurred around 6:30 a.m. on May 8 in the 900 block of Walnut Street, directly across from Lynn Middle School. The Las Cruces Police Department confirmed that the officer involved was not injured and has been placed on paid administrative leave, in accordance with standard protocol.
Authorities say the investigation remains in its early stages, and details about what led to the shooting have not yet been released. Walnut Street in front of Lynn Middle School has been closed to traffic during the on-scene investigation. The school remains open, with bus and parent drop-offs redirected to the northwest side near the gym via Nevada Avenue.
The case is being handled by the Officer-Involved Incident Task Force, which includes members of the New Mexico State Police, Las Cruces Police, Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office, and New Mexico State University Police. Findings from the investigation will be forwarded to the Third Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
