City Council Meets Tuesday

DEMING – The Deming City Council will hold its next regular meeting on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at 5:30 p.m. at the John Strand Municipal Building located at 1275 E. Pine Street. The meeting will be open to the public in person and online via GoToMeeting.

The agenda features several notable items, including two resolutions related to a proposed $1.2 million loan from the New Mexico Finance Authority to purchase a new fire truck for the city. The council will also vote on whether to submit a grant application to the New Mexico Department of Transportation for transportation project funding.

Among other key discussions:

  • Out-of-state travel is being requested by Cassie Arias-Ward to attend the International Economic Development Council’s Rural Retreat Conference in Great Falls, Montana from June 22–26.
  • Public input will be heard, with up to three minutes allotted per speaker.
  • Chris Anderson with Scouting America will present information regarding community safety and security.
  • State Representative Jennifer Jones and Senator Manny Ramos will present updates on capital outlay and the 2025 legislative session.
  • Mimbres Valley Medical Center will provide its annual community update.
  • A proclamation will be presented in recognition of Memorial Day on May 26.

Additional business includes consideration of a letter of support and sponsorship for the operation and maintenance of electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE), as well as an agreement with the New Mexico Department of Information Technology for participation in statewide safety radio communications.

The council will also consider a resolution to designate Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2025, as the date for the City of Deming’s next municipal election.

A public hearing is scheduled to address the proposed transfer of ownership of liquor license No. DIS-000205, associated with 5R Travel Center. The meeting will conclude with the city manager’s report.
