Marriage License Fee Increasing in New Mexico Starting June 20

DEMING – Couples planning to tie the knot in New Mexico will soon see a price change for marriage licenses. Barbara DeLaney, Luna County Clerk, announced that starting June 20, 2025, the cost of obtaining a marriage license will increase from $25 to $55 statewide.

The change comes as a result of Senate Bill 290, which was signed into law by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham on April 8. The revised fee structure is aimed at supporting both local recordkeeping systems and statewide family programs.

Under the new law, the $55 fee will be distributed as follows:

  • $20 to the County Clerk’s Office to support document preservation and technology upgrades,
  • $20 to the Children’s Trust Fund for child abuse prevention and support services,
  • $15 to the County General Fund.

The updated pricing ensures that New Mexico continues to invest in modernizing local government services while funding essential initiatives that benefit children and families.

Couples should note that licenses issued before June 20 will remain valid, no matter when the ceremony is held. Marriage licenses can be applied for in person or online, depending on county services. After the ceremony, the signed certificate must be returned for official recording.

Despite the increase, New Mexico will remain one of the most affordable states for marriage licenses. By comparison, Texas fees reach up to $82, and Arizona’s are typically around $83.

Residents are encouraged to consider applying after June 20 if they wish to support the new programs. For more information or to schedule an appointment, contact the Luna County Clerk’s Office at 575-546-0491.
