Deming Launches New Public Safety Program for Young Explorers

DEMING – Deming Luna County Economic Development and the City of Deming teamed up with local public safety agencies to launch the first-ever Pee Wee Explorer Camp, a new program designed for children ages 5 to 8 interested in careers in public safety.

Inspired by the success of the Deming Police Department’s Explorer Program for older students, this one-night event featured activities with the Deming Fire Department, Luna County Sheriff’s Office, and Deming Police. Young participants explored fire engines and ambulances, tackled an obstacle course, tried on SWAT gear, and toured a detective crime scene with McGruff.

About 20 children took part in the debut event, which also included snacks, community engagement, and a closing footrace with local heroes. Parents were encouraged to participate.

City Manager Aaron Sera said the City is proud to support programs that create positive connections between youth and first responders.

The Pee Wee Explorer Program is expected to return in 2026. For more information, contact Cassie Arias-Ward at (575) 546-8848 or [email protected].
