DEMING – Western New Mexico University has named longtime Mustang and WNMU Hall of Famer Matt Enriquez as Interim Athletics Director, bringing a familiar face and seasoned leader to the helm of Mustang Athletics.

Enriquez, a 2006 graduate of WNMU, has served the university for over two decades in a wide range of roles. From his early years as a standout student-athlete to his leadership as a coach and administrator, Enriquez’s contributions have left a lasting mark on the university’s athletic program. He is entering his 21st year at WNMU.

Most recently, Enriquez held the position of Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations Affairs. In that capacity, he managed the department’s budget, coordinated event operations, and provided direct sport supervision for both Men’s and Women’s Basketball and Golf. His ability to lead through multiple facets of the athletic department has earned him respect across campus and the broader community.

During his four-year playing career at WNMU, Enriquez scored 1,591 points, placing him among the top scorers in Mustang basketball history. His performance on the court, paired with his coaching accomplishments, earned him a place in the WNMU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2015.

“From player to coach to associate athletic director, Matt’s leadership and respect on and off the court has been an integral part of Mustang Athletics and places him in the perfect position to continue to build on that history,” said Acting President Jack Crocker.

As Interim Athletics Director, Enriquez is expected to provide continuity and stability while helping guide the department through a new phase of growth. His appointment reflects the university’s confidence in his experience, commitment, and deep Mustang pride.
