Lt. Governor Howie Morales Opts Out of 2026 Governor’s Race, Cites Focus on Family and WNMU

DEMING – New Mexico Lt. Governor Howie Morales has officially announced that he will not seek the Governor’s office in 2026, choosing instead to take what he called a “political pause” once his current term ends. Morales, a long-time advocate for education and former educator himself, says the decision stems from a desire to be more present with his family.

“I want to make sure that I’m present and available for my family,” Morales said. “Now’s not the time to run for Governor, but there’s still a lot to be done.”

According to KOAT, Morales stated he is “at peace” with the decision.

While Morales had been considering a campaign for the Democratic nomination—potentially joining a field that includes Sam Bregman, Deb Haaland, and Ken Miyagishima—he says his priority was first to determine whether to enter the race or step aside. Now that his choice is made, Morales confirms he has been in talks with Western New Mexico University in Silver City about the possibility of becoming its next President.

“I think at this time, I was focusing my decision on whether I was going to run for Governor or whether I was going to step aside,” he explained.

Morales says his focus will remain on education during the remainder of his term as Lt. Governor. He emphasized the progress made alongside Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham in areas such as public safety, mental health, and especially education.

“For me, it’s always about education,” Morales said. “I want to continue to push for many of the programs we’ve been able to establish, to continue to see that through.”
