DEMING – A Deming man is behind bars after a three-hour standoff with local law enforcement Monday afternoon that required the activation of the Deming Police Department’s Special Response Team (SRT).

Emmanuel Eric Maynes, 55, was taken into custody at approximately 4:45 p.m. at his residence located at 204 S. Tennyson. Maynes was wanted on a 6th Judicial District Court warrant for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, criminal damage to property, disorderly conduct, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to Deming Police Captain Jose Montoya, a DPD officer arrived at the home to serve the warrant and saw Maynes outside. When the officer ordered him to stop, Maynes ignored the command and went back into the house. Due to the seriousness of the charges, backup was requested, and the SRT was deployed.

The department’s MRAP armored command unit arrived with a 10-member team, including trained negotiators. Officers used the vehicle’s external speakers to order Maynes out of the home. Despite repeated commands, Maynes refused to surrender.

After approximately three hours of negotiations with no response, authorities made the decision to enter the home by force. Maynes was taken into custody without further incident.

He is currently being held at the Luna County Detention Center, where officials confirmed he is being detained on a no-bond warrant. In addition to the original charges, Maynes now faces an additional charge of resisting, evading, or obstructing officers.
