DEMING – On Tuesday, June 17, 2025, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham issued an emergency declaration and announced that her administration has secured federal Fire Management Assistance Grants (FMAG) to assist with efforts to contain the Trout Fire burning in the Gila National Forest near Silver City.
The Trout Fire has burned tens of thousands of acres in Grant County, prompting evacuations and drawing in state and federal support. The Governor’s emergency declaration—Executive Order 2025-235—allocates $750,000 in emergency funding to the New Mexico Department of Homeland Security & Emergency Management (DHSEM) and authorizes the deployment of the New Mexico National Guard.
The FMAG program allows the state to request firefighting resources from federal and external agencies, including additional crews, air support, fire engines, shelter assistance, and operational personnel.
“New Mexicans are all too familiar with the devastation that comes from wildfires that bring danger and destruction to everything in their paths,” said Governor Lujan Grisham. “I appreciate our federal partners for taking this threat seriously and for doing their part in supporting the responders who are working their hardest to protect the community.”
The State Emergency Operations Center continues to coordinate support requested by local emergency managers. The American Red Cross has opened a shelter for evacuees at the Grant County Business and Conference Center, located at 3031 US Highway 180 in Silver City.
