NMDOT Urges Caution During Monsoon Season

DEMING – The New Mexico Department of Transportation is urging motorists across southern New Mexico to stay alert and drive with caution as the region enters monsoon season. The National Weather Service forecasts widespread showers and thunderstorms through Thursday, June 26.

Monsoon storms can develop rapidly and cause hazardous travel conditions, including flooding, reduced visibility, and debris on the roads. NMDOT works closely with the National Weather Service during these periods and encourages all drivers to monitor forecasts before traveling.

NMDOT’s monsoon driving safety tips include:

  • Slow down and buckle up. Wet roads increase the risk of hydroplaning—adjust your speed and always wear a seatbelt.
  • Keep your distance. Allow extra space to stop safely on slick roads.
  • Turn around, don’t drown. Never drive through flooded roadways or around barricades. Arroyos can flood rapidly.
  • Use headlights. Stay visible during rain or low-light conditions.
  • Pull aside, stay alive. In heavy rain or dust, pull over safely, turn off your lights and engine, and keep your foot off the brake.
  • Avoid cruise control. It reduces vehicle control on wet pavement.
  • Stay alert. Watch for rocks, debris, and fallen branches.
  • Treat signal outages as four-way stops.
  • Be courteous. Responsible driving helps keep all road users safe.

NMDOT remains committed to public safety and encourages travelers to check road conditions before departing. Visit www.nmroads.com or dial 511 for the latest updates.
