WNMU Provides Housing for State Police and National Guard Amid Trout Fire Response

DEMING – As the Trout Fire continues to burn through parts of the Gila National Forest, Western New Mexico University (WNMU) has opened its residence halls to displaced students, faculty, and staff—as well as to New Mexico State Police and New Mexico National Guard (NMNG) personnel supporting wildfire response in southwest New Mexico.

The Trout Fire began on June 12 and has consumed over 47,000 acres as of June 24. State Police are coordinating with local law enforcement to evacuate affected areas, while National Guard troops are staffing four checkpoints and are prepared to monitor return traffic if zones are upgraded to allow re-entry.

With heavy rain in the forecast, flash flooding remains a concern. NMNG has already delivered 60 pallets of sandbags and transported an additional 1,600 filled sandbags from the Southern New Mexico Correctional Facility for distribution.

The National Guard has also deployed a swift water rescue team from its Community Emergency Response Team, which remains on standby.

WNMU Provost and Acting President Dr. Jack Crocker said the university is proud to assist.
“WNMU is extremely glad to be able to provide support and housing for our students, faculty, and staff displaced by the fires, and especially for the police and military members engaged in protecting the region and combating the spreading destruction,” said Crocker.

Brigadier General Pia Romero, NMNG Director of the Joint Staff, praised the university’s support.
“We are always impressed by how quickly and meaningfully New Mexicans and institutions like WNMU band together… We offer our deepest thanks to the staff of Western New Mexico University for their help when it matters most.”
