Measles Cases Reported at Luna County Detention Center; Safety Measures in Effect

Luna County, New Mexico – The Luna County Detention Center, in coordination with the New Mexico Department of Health and CorrHealth, has confirmed five positive cases of measles among detainees and has enacted immediate precautionary protocols.

The first symptoms were observed on June 19, 2025, when several detainees began experiencing cough, fever, rash, and headache. By June 24, PCR testing confirmed the measles cases.

PCR, or polymerase chain reaction testing, is a highly accurate method used to detect the genetic material of viruses like measles. It allows for early identification, even before symptoms fully develop.

In response to the positive tests, detainees in the affected housing area were placed under quarantine, and vaccinations were offered to both detainees and staff as a preventive measure.

To help limit the spread of infection:

  • All in-person visitation has been suspended
  • Virtual hearings are being arranged for court appearances
  • Medical care is being provided under Department of Health guidance
  • Facility-wide infection control procedures have been implemented

The quarantine will remain in effect until lifted by the Department of Health and CorrHealth. Officials stress that the health and safety of detainees, staff, and the surrounding community remain their top priority.

Luna County officials expressed appreciation to DOH, CorrHealth, and detention center staff for their prompt and coordinated response.
