Deming cross country team builds on commitment and consistency

DEMING – With a new season on the horizon, Deming High School’s cross-country team is embracing a summer of dedication, early-morning runs, and a focus on long-term success. Head coach Vidal Montoya said commitment and consistency will be the cornerstones for his runners this year.

According to a report in Tuesday’s Deming Headlight, incoming junior Oscar Pacheco has emerged as one of the most consistent performers for the Wildcats, regularly attending the 6:30 a.m. training sessions and logging tough mileage in the desert heat. His work ethic has earned praise from Montoya, who called Pacheco “one of the hardest workers we have.”

On the girls’ side, incoming sophomore Kash Albrecht is stepping into a leadership role for the Lady Wildcats after a strong freshman campaign. Coach Montoya noted her maturity and growing confidence, adding that Albrecht is “learning the structure of what we do,” and building strength with every mile.

The team is blending experienced athletes with a new crop of freshmen runners, many of whom come from middle school track programs. Montoya is focusing on development and structure early, using field runs and mapped routes to train up his young squad.

With the first official meet still weeks away, Deming’s cross country athletes are putting in the work now to be competitive later—one stride at a time.
