Luna County 4-H Celebrates State Conference Success

DEMING – Luna County 4-H members made their mark this week at the 2025 State 4-H Conference, held on the NMSU campus in Las Cruces. Youth participants attended workshops, educational tours, cookouts, and even a few dances—capping off the week with several state-level honors.

The Agronomy Team brought home the title of 2025 State 4-H Champions, with Braylin Chaffin named High Point Individual. Braylin also earned top honors in Wildlife, where Team 1 placed second overall, and Team 2 secured third.

In Entomology, the local team earned second place, with Almarae Schultz taking High Point Individual. Additional team placements include second place in the FCS Bowl, as well as strong showings in Horticulture and Consumer Decision Making.

These events support the mission of 4-H, which aims to develop leadership, citizenship, communication, and practical life skills in youth. Participants not only demonstrate knowledge in competitive events but also build confidence, teamwork, and a commitment to lifelong learning.

The celebration continued as several local leaders were recognized for their dedication. James Swope, along with Gene and Cosetta Lewis, received the Friends of 4-H Award, while Wesley and Dianna Peterson were inducted into the 4-H Hall of Fame.

Organizers say the conference was not only a chance to compete but also to learn, build friendships, and grow as young leaders. The next big events for local 4-H students will be the upcoming state and area county fairs, where members will once again showcase their hard work, projects, and skills.
