From the ground up: Ranchette owners fuel ecological progress in Luna County

DEMING – The Luna County Ranchette Owners Association (LCROA) has awarded $17,000 to three local organizations as part of its ongoing effort to support ecological and community-based initiatives in Luna County. The funding was distributed through the LCROA Donor Advised Fund, which is managed in partnership with the Gila Community Foundation, based in Silver City.

This year’s recipients include Luna Star Performing Arts, which received funding to support healthy activity programs for children; Deming Animal Guardians, whose spay and neuter services will be expanded through the grant; and Deming Silver Linings, which will use its portion of the funds to introduce biodegradable lunch boxes as part of their ecological outreach.

The LC Ranchette Owners Association, established in 1972, represents rural landowners in Luna County and works to protect water rights, improve infrastructure, and promote sustainable rural development. As a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization, LCROA uses its donor-advised fund to support projects that align with its mission of environmental stewardship and landowner advocacy.

The Gila Community Foundation serves Grant, Luna, Hidalgo, and Catron counties, offering fiscal sponsorship, capacity-building support, and donor-directed grantmaking. The foundation’s funding comes from individual donors, community fundraising campaigns such as “Give Grandly,” and managed endowments. Their collaboration with LCROA enables community members to have a direct role in identifying and supporting local priorities.
