DEMING – A coordinated response by multiple law enforcement agencies ensured the safety of Deming High School on Tuesday after a report of a student possibly carrying a weapon.
Deming Police, joined by New Mexico State Police, the U.S. Border Patrol, Luna County Sheriff’s Department, and other surrounding agencies, placed the school under a brief shelter-in-place order while classrooms were checked. Investigators determined that no direct threats had been made, and the student in question was not on campus.
Further investigation confirmed that the student was in Las Cruces with a family member. Local law enforcement there conducted a welfare check and verified the student’s safety.
Once the school was cleared, the shelter-in-place was lifted, and students were dismissed under the supervision of law enforcement officers, who remained until the campus was fully cleared.
Both the Deming Police Department and Deming Public Schools thanked safety staff, administrators, and responding agencies for their rapid and coordinated efforts to protect students.
