Crime, Fires, and Arrests Keep Deming Authorities Busy

DEMING – Local law enforcement and first responders handled a wide range of calls this past week, from arrests on serious charges to unusual reports across the city.

Cheyenne Marie Bishop, 28, of Deming, was taken into custody by state police on a failure to appear warrant, while 31-year-old Maximiliano Fernandez of El Paso faced the same charge, with a money order of $281 attached to his case. Deputies also arrested 60-year-old Tony Maynes of Deming on a magistrate warrant for failure to pay, with bond set at one hundred dollars.

On August 12, officers brought in 18-year-old Aaron Cuevas-Garcia of Deming on a misdemeanor failure to appear warrant. That same day, 30-year-old Xochitl Aimee Flores of Truth or Consequences was charged with bringing contraband into the Luna County Detention Center and failing to appear in court. Deming police also arrested 60-year-old Daniel Palumbo on shoplifting charges at Walmart, concealing identity, and for an outstanding municipal warrant tied to unpaid fines.

Additional arrests included Alejandro Ismael Delgado, 23, of Deming, picked up by state police on a probation and parole warrant; Jonathan Gamboa, 22, arrested on two failure-to-comply warrants; and Javier Isaac Huerta, 24, arrested on a separate warrant. Police also reported that Kristina Telles, 36, of Deming, is facing charges of false imprisonment and battery, while 34-year-old Miguel A. Barrera was charged with battery against a household member. Forty-one-year-old Kristofer Herren of Deming was booked by state police on probation violations and is being held without bond.

Other reports included a case of battery upon a peace officer involving Brenda Quintana, 25, of Chaparral, who was already incarcerated at the detention center when the charge was filed. Israel Hernandez, 42, of Deming, is facing charges of child abandonment or abuse. In juvenile cases, a 17-year-old was taken into custody for racing and reckless driving on Pine Street, later released to his parents, and another 17-year-old faces charges of battery and criminal damage to a household member.

Beyond arrests, property crimes were also reported. A 2021 Forest River Rockwood Geopro RV valued at $20,000 was stolen from the Little Vineyard RV Park. The Deming Humane Society reported a break-in to a wooden box where chemicals worth about $500 were taken. A man also reported losing a 9mm Ruger handgun, believed to have fallen from his vehicle on South Diamond Street, and the firearm has been entered into NCIC as missing.

Emergency calls included a structure fire at 2220 South Gold Street in the early morning of August 15. The home was fully engulfed when responders arrived, though firefighters quickly put out the blaze. No injuries were reported and the cause remains under investigation. Code enforcement cited a resident on East Fourth Street for nuisance violations involving weeds, while another on West Fourth was cited after his pit bull bit a FedEx driver. The dog was quarantined and no serious injuries were reported.
