DEMING: Standoff, alleged weapon assault, and fugitive arrest in separate cases

DEMING – In three separate incidents Tuesday in Deming, local police and federal agents handled a vehicle standoff, an alleged assault with a weapon, and the arrest of a wanted fugitive.

Police say a domestic dispute involving David Huerta, 37, escalated into a standoff inside a vehicle. He was arrested on suspicion of battery against a household member, two counts of resisting/evading/obstructing, and nine counts of assault upon a peace officer. Officers say he threatened them with what appeared to be a weapon; after the arrest, the item was determined to be a flashlight. A K-9 team used gas and less-lethal bean bags to take him into custody.

In a separate case on East Cedar, officers arrested Alberto Elias, 65, on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Police say he was found hiding behind a truck with an ice pick, which was seized as evidence. Elias allegedly acknowledged being in a physical altercation but denied using the weapon.

Deming officers also assisted the U.S. Marshals Service at the Baymont Hotel with the arrest of Jesus Gabriel Romero, 27, wanted on failure-to-appear warrants in Luna and Doña Ana counties and an additional bench warrant. Marshals took Romero into custody as he exited a room; Deming officers provided scene security and documentation support.

Information from the Deming Police Department and the Luna County Detention Center. All subjects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
