County Commission Quorum Possible at State Land Office Meeting

DEMING – The Luna County Board of Commissioners has issued notice that a quorum may be present at a New Mexico State Land Office meeting, in accordance with state open meetings law, which mandates that official bodies inform the public when a majority might be gathered.

The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 24, 2025, at 5:00 p.m., at the Learning Center, 300 South Diamond Avenue, Deming. Although some commissioners may attend, no county business will be on the agenda.

The State Land Office meeting is one of a series of public informational sessions being held by the New Mexico State Land Office (NMSLO) and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) regarding a proposed land exchange. Under this proposal, state trust land parcels — particularly those that are “landlocked” (i.e. difficult to access or of limited utility) — would be transferred to BLM. In exchange, NMSLO would receive lands of comparable market value that are better suited to its mission of generating revenue for public schools, universities, and hospitals. The exchange also is intended to integrate certain parcels into the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument. Importantly, a portion of the land under consideration lies within Luna County.

Members of the public are invited to attend the meeting and provide input on the proposed exchange.
