DEMING – Fourteen-year-old Makenzie Shumacher, a ninth-grade student currently homeschooled, was among the winners in the commercial portion of the Southwestern New Mexico State Fair royalty pageant.
Shumacher is active in both 4-H and FFA, where she shows two male Boer goats. In the past she has earned second- and third-place honors and has regularly qualified for the junior livestock sale at the fair. She has also taken part in Deming Public Schools band and choir, and participated in debate club activities.
Her family includes her sister, Noel Saar, and her brother, Gavin Chaffin. Shumacher said she enjoys being part of the fair community and looks forward to continuing her involvement.
