DEMING – The City of Deming has announced that enforcement of the prohibition on single-use plastic bags will begin November 1, 2025. The ordinance is part of a broader effort to reduce plastic pollution and encourage more sustainable practices in the community.
Under the new rules, retailers will no longer be allowed to provide customers with plastic carryout bags of any kind. Instead, businesses may offer non-plastic reusable bags, recyclable paper bags made with recycled content, or encourage shoppers to bring their own bags. Exceptions will apply to bags used for fresh produce or meats, as outlined in New Mexico’s Single-Use Plastic Bag Act.
City officials say the goal is to lessen the environmental impact of plastic waste and move toward a cleaner, greener future. “We encourage all residents to support this change by bringing reusable bags when shopping,” officials said in a release.
Retailers were given a transition period to prepare for compliance, and enforcement will now begin as the city moves forward with this initiative.
