Stars, Telescopes, and Winter Skies Light Up Rockhound and City of Rocks This Weekend

DEMING — Stargazers and night-sky enthusiasts will have a chance to explore the winter heavens this weekend as Rockhound State Park and City of Rocks State Park host special astronomy programs on Friday, December 19, and Saturday, December 20, in partnership with the Astronomy Friends of The Parks.

The events are weather permitting and are designed for all ages, from first-time sky watchers to seasoned astronomy fans. Each program begins about 45 minutes after sunset, with participants encouraged to arrive around sunset or within 15 minutes afterward to get oriented and settled.

The evening starts with a laser-guided tour of the night sky, highlighting visible constellations, stars, and celestial features unique to the season. That presentation is followed by hands-on telescope viewing, with members of the Astronomy Friends of The Parks available to assist visitors. Telescope observations typically last around two hours, offering views of planets, stars, and deep-sky objects when conditions allow.

On Friday, December 19, the program takes place at Rockhound State Park on the viewing patio just west of the Visitors’ Center. On Saturday, December 20, the program moves to City of Rocks State Park, where astronomy activities will be held at the Orion group campsite. The Gene and Elizabeth Simon Observatory, located at the campsite, adds to the experience and provides an exceptional setting for nighttime viewing among the park’s iconic rock formations. Sunset at City of Rocks is expected around 5:10 p.m.

Organizers note that both parks offer very different but equally striking environments, making each program a unique experience. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own chairs if possible, as seating is limited, and to dress warmly for cool evening temperatures.

To help preserve night vision, attendees are asked to bring a small red-colored flashlight if they have one. For those who do not, loaner lights will be available on site.

These programs are held at New Mexico State Park venues, and all park rules and regulations apply. Entrance or pass fees will be required, and guests are encouraged to check park status, weather conditions, and any alerts before attending.
