City of Deming Purchased Former Balboa Motel for Transitional Living Use

DEMING — The City of Deming purchased the former Balboa Motel property in 2023 at an appraised value of $332,500, according to city records, with the intent of using the site as a transitional living facility.

The purchase included the motel rooms and the restaurant portion of the property located across the street from McDonald’s. The acquisition did not include the separate building currently housing a barbershop.

City documentation shows the purchase was funded using General Fund monies.

Officials indicate the original intent behind the acquisition was to create a transitional living site, citing the existing motel rooms and on-site kitchen space as features that made the property suitable for that purpose. Transitional living facilities are typically designed to provide short-term housing and support services for individuals working toward stable, permanent housing.

While the property is located on Deming’s west side, city records clarify that the purchase was not part of the city’s formal west side revitalization project, though officials note the acquisition may still aid broader revitalization efforts in that area.

No public timeline has been announced regarding renovations, redevelopment, or when transitional living services may be implemented at the site.

Deming News will continue to follow the project and provide updates as additional information becomes available.
