DEMING — Strong winds and blowing dust are expected to impact much of southern New Mexico over the next several days, prompting travel advisories from state and federal officials.
Wind advisories are in effect from Tuesday, February 17, through Friday, February 20, 2026, with the most hazardous conditions expected daily between noon and 8 p.m. The National Weather Service forecasts sustained winds of 25 to 35 miles per hour, with peak gusts ranging from 45 to 65 miles per hour.
Officials warn that blowing dust could significantly reduce visibility, particularly in open and rural areas, and that conditions may change rapidly. Drivers are encouraged to monitor local forecasts before traveling and to check current roadway conditions at nmroads.com or by calling 511.
The New Mexico Department of Transportation will be monitoring roadway conditions in coordination with local law enforcement. Travelers are urged to use caution, especially operators of high-profile vehicles, which may be more vulnerable to strong crosswinds.
Motorists who encounter blowing dust or dust storms are advised to avoid driving through them whenever possible. If visibility deteriorates, drivers should pull completely off the roadway, turn off all vehicle lights, set the parking brake, and remain in the vehicle with seat belts fastened until conditions improve.
