DEMING – Deming Public Schools is addressing concerns after two buses experienced mechanical issues during a student trip to Artesia. Bus 109, a 2022 model in good condition, encountered engine trouble near Mescalero at approximately 1:42 p.m. when an engine warning light prompted the driver to pull over for safety.
A second bus, Bus 100A, a 2020 model also in good condition, was dispatched as a rescue vehicle along with a district mechanic. Just past Alamogordo, Bus 100A displayed a check engine light, with remote diagnostics indicating possible fuel system or DEF quality issues. Although the bus did not break down, there were concerns about potential fuel problems that could affect its performance.
Bus services from Artesia and Alamogordo school districts were provided to ensure students could reach their game and return safely home. Due to continued concerns about engine performance, an Alamogordo bus was used to transport students back to Deming as a precaution.
The district has determined that the issues were linked to fuel contaminants affecting both diesel and DEF quality, which led to engine warning lights and poor performance. Both buses are undergoing fuel system flushing and filter replacement to resolve these issues.
A District Spokesperson told KDEM News that the Deming Public Schools appreciates the support from Artesia and Alamogordo districts, ensuring the safe return of students.
The district stressed its commitment to maintaining the safety and reliability of its transportation services for all students.
