DEMING – Luna County is taking significant steps to improve emergency response accuracy and public safety by updating certain property addresses in accordance with federal Next Generation 911 (NG911) standards.
The NG911 initiative is a nationwide upgrade to the legacy 911 system, incorporating digital and advanced location-based technologies to enhance how emergency calls are routed and responded to. Luna County’s participation in this upgrade is aimed at ensuring that all emergency dispatch and response efforts are as fast and accurate as possible—especially in rural or developing areas where address inconsistencies have historically delayed services.
Beginning May 3, 2025, affected Luna County property owners will begin receiving official written notices by mail. These letters will include your updated address and clear instructions on how to update your records, signage, and correspondence. The changes will primarily impact addresses that are outdated, duplicated, or do not align with current mapping and emergency routing systems.
In a 911 emergency, even seconds count. The upgraded NG911 platform will allow call centers to instantly pinpoint the location of a call with much greater accuracy—an especially important improvement in areas where traditional addressing is sparse, inconsistent, or based on outdated road maps.
While not all addresses in the county will be affected, the Planning Department encourages all residents to be on the lookout for official communication. If you have concerns or wish to verify whether your property is part of the update, you may call the Luna County Planning Department at (575) 543-6621. Staff will be available to answer questions and guide residents through any necessary steps.
The address changes will be made at no cost to property owners, and the County assures residents that all relevant government departments—including emergency services, postal services, and utility companies—will be notified to ensure a smooth transition.
This effort is part of Luna County’s broader commitment to modernizing infrastructure and improving public safety systems. The County thanks residents for their patience and cooperation as the updates move forward.
