State Police to Conduct Sobriety Checkpoints and Patrols Across New Mexico in May

DEMING – Drivers in Luna County and across New Mexico should expect increased law enforcement presence on the roads this May as State Police announce a statewide effort targeting impaired driving and vehicle compliance.

Throughout May 2025, New Mexico State Police will conduct sobriety checkpoints, saturation patrols, and registration, insurance, and driver’s license checks in all 33 counties. These initiatives are part of an ongoing campaign to reduce impaired driving-related fatalities by raising public awareness and encouraging responsible choices behind the wheel.

“These checkpoints are helping to change society’s attitude about driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs,” officials stated in a release. Authorities emphasize that hundreds of lives could be saved each year if drivers consistently choose not to drive impaired.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation’s Traffic Safety Division supports these efforts with overtime grant funding for law enforcement agencies statewide. This funding enhances enforcement, training, education, and equipment in high-risk areas, reinforcing road safety throughout New Mexico communities.
