DEMING – As President Donald Trump orders increased military presence at the U.S.–Mexico border, questions have emerged about active deployments in Luna County. KDEM News has reached out to both the New Mexico National Guard and the U.S. Border Patrol for clarification. As of this morning, no formal confirmation has been made regarding the presence of active-duty troops stationed in the Luna County region.
Reports indicate that the U.S. Army is involved in the effort, with personnel deployed exclusively on federally owned public lands. Private property is not being used in the operation. A temporary encampment referred to as “Camp Roosevelt” has been mentioned in unverified online discussions, though no official sources have confirmed its existence.
President Trump has stated that “the military must protect our borders until the wall is finished,” a move expected to face legal challenges. Constitutional scholars suggest the courts may ultimately have to decide whether the president has the authority to place U.S. military forces in enforcement roles along the southern border.
Mexico’s President, Claudia Sheinbaum, has publicly criticized the U.S. action as “unnecessary militarization,” warning it could increase tensions between the two nations.
