DEMING – The Bureau of Land Management has announced that fire restrictions will go into effect starting May 23, 2025, across BLM-managed lands in the Albuquerque and Las Cruces Districts, which include Luna, Doña Ana, Grant, Hidalgo, and 11 other counties across central and southern New Mexico.
The restrictions prohibit the following:
- Campfires or use of stoves outside of developed campsites or picnic areas
- Smoking unless inside a vehicle or in a cleared area at least three feet wide
- Use of fireworks, pyrotechnics, or exploding targets—all banned year-round on BLM lands
“Ongoing drought and low snowpack have elevated fire danger across much of the region,” said BLM State Fire Management Officer Will Briggs. “With the public’s cooperation, we can prevent new fire starts.”
Violations may result in fines of up to $100,000, up to one year in prison, or both. Fire suppression and damage costs may also be charged to violators.
Exemptions are limited to certain officials and those with written permits. More details and updates can be found at www.nmfireinfo.com or by calling the BLM Albuquerque Office at 575-761-8700 or the Las Cruces Office at 575-525-4300.
