DEMING – On June 10, 2025, the New Mexico Department of Health confirmed that wastewater in Deming tested positive for the measles virus as part of a statewide surveillance effort. While not an official case, this detection likely indicates that an infectious person was recently in the area.
Dr. Daniel Sosin, Deputy Secretary for Health, stated that the virus’s presence could signal additional undiagnosed cases in Luna County. As of mid-June, 81 confirmed measles cases have been reported across the state—primarily in children and unvaccinated adults.
Health officials urge Deming and Luna County residents to review their MMR vaccination records and watch for symptoms, which include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and rash.
