DEMING – The Deming-Luna County Humane Society is urging all pet owners to vaccinate their dogs following an outbreak of parvovirus among several animals recently left at the local shelter. Shelter staff confirmed that multiple dogs have tested positive for parvo, a highly contagious and often fatal virus that affects both puppies and adult dogs.
“This is a bad time of year for the virus to spread,” the shelter warned in a public notice, noting that distemper is also a growing concern. Both diseases can be deadly without proper vaccination and can spread quickly, especially in shelter environments or among unvaccinated pets.
Shelter officials have implemented mandatory testing for all dogs entering the facility. Dogs that test positive for parvo are not available for adoption at this time.
The Humane Society emphasized that parvo is not just a puppy disease, and encouraged local residents to contact the shelter or a local veterinary clinic for information about vaccinations and preventative care.
“These animals depend on you to be healthy and have a chance at survival,” the shelter stated.
