DEMING – Eligible New Mexico residents who visit the Motor Vehicle Division are now automatically registered to vote as part of their transaction. The change comes under the state’s new automatic voter registration law, passed in last year’s legislative session.
Anyone applying for or renewing a driver’s license or state ID at the MVD will now have their voter information automatically submitted to the Secretary of State. Those already registered will have their information updated to reflect any changes.
County clerks will then mail each voter a confirmation letter with details about their districts, registration status, and how to opt out if they choose.
The new process is part of House Bill 4, also known as the New Mexico Voting Rights Act, aimed at improving election access and keeping voter rolls up to date.
