SILVER CITY – Western New Mexico University has announced the return of Micaela Medina as the new assistant coach for the Mustang women’s basketball program. Medina, a former WNMU student-athlete and graduate assistant, brings extensive experience and a deep connection to the university’s athletics.
Medina began her coaching career at WNMU as a graduate assistant under Coach Rusty Kennedy from 2012 to 2015. During that time, she played a pivotal role in one of the program’s most successful seasons, contributing to daily operations and player development.
Following her time at WNMU, Medina served as a varsity assistant at Del Norte High School in Albuquerque, where she helped lead the team to a district title and a top-ten state tournament seed. She later became head coach at Cobre High School in Bayard, guiding the program to its first state tournament appearance in over a decade. Most recently, she coached at Valencia High School in Los Lunas, leading the Jaguars to two state quarterfinals during her five-season tenure.
As a player, Medina suited up for the Mustangs in the 2009–2010 season and earned numerous accolades during her high school years, including First Team All-District and Second Team All-State honors. She was also a McDonald’s All-American nominee and Albuquerque Public Schools Athlete of the Year.
Medina’s return to WNMU represents a full-circle moment, as she brings not only coaching expertise but also Mustang pride back to the sidelines in Silver City.
