Grant County Deputy Charged After Disturbing Animal Abuse Incident Caught on Video

DEMING – A disturbing video circulating on social media shows a Grant County sheriff’s deputy threatening a fellow deputy before throwing a bunny, resulting in the rabbit’s death. In the video, one deputy attempts to intervene, but is ultimately unable to prevent the act.

According to KRQE-TV, the incident occurred in August 2024, when two deputies, a sergeant, and a corporal with the Grant County Sheriff’s Office encountered a baby rabbit on a road near Hachita, New Mexico. One deputy attempted to move the rabbit to safety. However, Deputy Alejandro Gomez demanded the rabbit, even pointing a taser at his colleague until the animal was handed over. Gomez then smiled at the camera and threw the bunny against a patrol truck, killing it.

“The Sheriff and this department do not condone any type of misconduct whatsoever. You know, we are taking every possible step to address the situation and ensure accountability within the department,” said Lt. Cody Cooper with the Grant County Sheriff’s Office.

New Mexico State Police were notified in January. According to court documents, Gomez later pointed a firearm at the same deputy that evening. The victim also reported that earlier in the month, Gomez had taken his phone and brandished a gun when the deputy tried to retrieve it.

Gomez now faces four counts of assault on a peace officer and one count of extreme animal cruelty. He has been placed on paid administrative leave since February and awaits his next court appearance early next month.

As for the higher-ranking deputies who filmed the incident, the sheriff’s office says they have been reprimanded. Further disciplinary actions against Gomez may follow, pending the court outcome.
