SILVER CITY – Western New Mexico University’s football program has been picked to finish ninth in the 2025 Lone Star Conference preseason poll, announced Wednesday during LSC Media Day in Richardson, Texas.
The Mustangs earned 53 total points in the poll, which is voted on by conference coaches, sports information directors, and media representatives. WNMU came in just behind Eastern New Mexico (88 points) and trails Midwestern State (139 points), while Angelo State took the top spot with 23 first-place votes and 292 total points. Central Washington (257) and UT Permian Basin (229) rounded out the top three.
Now entering his third season as head coach, Billy Hickman remains focused on the team’s internal goals rather than outside projections.
“We’re not in the business of proving polls right,” Hickman said. “We’ve got experienced guys in key spots, a hungry locker room, and we’re focused on playing our brand of football. The rest will take care of itself.”
Angelo State quarterback Braeden Fuller was named the LSC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. The Preseason Defensive Player of the Year has yet to be announced.
WNMU will open its 2025 season at home on Friday, August 30 at 6 p.m., facing off against regional rival Adams State at Ben Altamirano Field.
