DEMING – The National Weather Service has issued a Weather Watch for Monday, warning of the potential for heavy rainfall and localized flooding across southern New Mexico, including Luna County, Deming, and Columbus.
Storms are expected to begin developing this afternoon and may persist through the evening and overnight hours. Forecasters say any storm that forms will be capable of producing significant rainfall in a short period of time.
A Flood Watch is now in effect for several communities, including Deming, Columbus, Las Cruces, Truth or Consequences, and Silver City. Weather officials caution that even moderate storms could lead to localized flooding, particularly in low-lying or poorly drained areas.
The risk is even greater in regions that have recently experienced heavy rain, such as Ruidoso, where saturated ground conditions may amplify flooding potential.
Authorities urge residents to avoid low-lying and poor drainage areas, and to remember the phrase: Turn Around, Don’t Drown when approaching flooded roadways.
Rain chances are expected to decrease by late week as temperatures begin climbing back toward the triple digits, with highs near 100 degrees by the weekend.
