DEMING – Last night in Silver City, Deming Public Schools Superintendent Nicholas Wohlgemuth joined regional educators, the New Mexico Public Education Department, and the Los Alamos National Laboratory Foundation for a discussion on the Yazzie-Martinez lawsuit.
The case, filed in 2014, found that the state failed to provide adequate education for Native American, low-income, English-learner, and special-needs students. Despite more funding in recent years, achievement gaps remain, and the courts have ordered a detailed remedial plan.
At the meeting, families and educators highlighted three top priorities: transparency in how the plan is built, better communication with communities, and preparation to ensure lasting change in classrooms across New Mexico.
