DEMING – Columbus is reviving its own police force for the first time in 14 years and is calling for a visionary chief to take the helm.

Village officials say this represents a rare opportunity to build a modern department from the ground up, including creating policies, hiring officers and staff, and setting the culture and direction in partnership with the community.

Columbus, located three miles from the U.S.–Mexico border, is home to about 1,800 residents and has a rich history with strong international ties. Leaders say they are not looking for a traditional police chief, but for a builder, a mentor, and a diplomat who values transparency, collaboration, and community-based policing.

The Chief of Police will report directly to the mayor and serve as the department’s top authority. Duties will include developing policies and training, managing the inaugural budget, overseeing patrol and investigations, and serving as the public face of the department.

Qualifications include at least five years of law enforcement experience, with one year in a supervisory role, fluency in both English and Spanish, and eligibility for New Mexico law enforcement officer certification. Residency within Columbus will also be required within six months of hire.

Applicants are asked to submit a resume, cover letter, and professional references to Mayor Philip H. Skinner at the Village of Columbus. Additional information is available by emailing [email protected].

With the creation of the Columbus Police Department, officials say their goal is to strengthen safety and build stronger ties with county, state, and federal partners.
