DEMING – Night-sky enthusiasts will have two opportunities this weekend to take part in the fall astronomy programs offered at Rockhound State Park and City of Rocks State Park. The events, presented in partnership with Astronomy Friends of the Parks, are scheduled for Friday, November 21, at Rockhound and Saturday, November 22, at City of Rocks.
Weather permitting, each program begins about 45 minutes after sunset with a laser-guided tour highlighting the constellations and celestial features of the evening sky. Telescope viewing follows, with volunteers on hand to assist participants. Each session lasts about two hours. Sunset on Saturday at City of Rocks will be around 5:10 p.m.
Visitors are encouraged to arrive between sunset and 15 minutes afterward to get oriented, and to bring a chair if possible since seating is limited. When visible, the planets may be observed before full darkness. Red-light flashlights are recommended to preserve night vision, though loaners are available.
Friday’s program at Rockhound will take place at the viewing patio west of the Visitors’ Center. Saturday’s program at City of Rocks will be held at the Orion group campsite, home to the Gene and Elizabeth Simon Observatory.
Both parks remind attendees to check weather conditions, alerts and park status before traveling. Regular state park fees will apply.
