Traffic Alert: Major Delays Expected on NM 26 and NM 11 This Week

DEMING – Motorists across Luna County are being advised to plan ahead and use extra caution as multiple highway construction projects continue through the week of February 1 through February 8, 2026. Drivers are reminded to reduce speed, obey all posted signs, and remain alert for heavy equipment and construction crews working in active zones. Conditions may change without notice, and double fines for speeding in work zones may be in effect.

On NM 26, Mountain States Constructors, Inc. is continuing roadway rehabilitation work from mile marker 0 at the U.S. 180 intersection to mile marker 10. Traffic is being controlled around the clock using temporary signals, flagging operations, and pilot cars. Speed limits in the work zone have been reduced to 35 miles per hour or lower, and drivers should be prepared for significantly longer wait times. Current delays are estimated at 30 to 45 minutes. Oversize and overweight loads are not permitted on this route, and commercial vehicles are being asked to use alternate routes during construction.

Work is also underway on NM 11 near the Columbus Port of Entry, where Morrow Enterprises, Inc. is constructing a concrete box culvert at the intersection of NM 11 and El Paso Avenue, just north of the port. Speed limits have been reduced in the area, and motorists are urged to follow all traffic control devices. Construction crews are scheduled to operate from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, with the project expected to continue through Spring 2026.

Drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time, stay patient in work zones, and watch closely for changing traffic patterns as both projects move forward.
