DEMING — The Village of Columbus is encouraging residents to come together and help prepare the community for Cabalgata 2026, scheduled for Saturday, March 14, a signature event that celebrates history, unity, and cross-border friendship.
Village officials are asking residents to take time in the coming weeks to clean up yards, sidewalks, alleys, and public spaces so Columbus can present its best face to the many visitors expected to attend. Leaders say a clean and welcoming community reflects the pride residents take in their town and its deep historical roots.
Cabalgata has grown over the years into a full family-friendly celebration. Organizers say the event will feature a free Family Fun Day with no cover charges at any of the facilities, offering activities, entertainment, vendors, food booths, and games for all ages. Mariachi music and folkloric dancers are also planned in the downtown plaza, creating a festive atmosphere throughout the day.
A major highlight of Cabalgata is the Memorial Ride, which begins at the U.S.–Mexico border and travels into Columbus. Riders are invited to bring their own horse, a friend, or even a friend’s horse to participate in what organizers describe as Luna County’s longest equine parade. The ride honors shared history while emphasizing camaraderie and goodwill among participants.
Event organizers say Cabalgata represents a powerful transformation of history. What was once a tragic turning point has become an annual celebration of unity, with men and women from both sides of the border coming together to renew promises of friendship and cooperation.
Additional events include the annual Camp Furlong Day at Pancho Villa State Park, with speakers to be announced, and the Columbus Historical Society’s memorial honoring the victims of the infamous raid on Columbus in the predawn hours of March 9, 1916.
Village leaders say even small efforts by residents can make a meaningful difference as the community prepares to welcome visitors for one of its most important cultural events of the year.
