DEMING – Silver Linings of Deming will host its Empty Bowl Fundraiser on Saturday, February 28, from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the First Christian Church Fellowship Hall, located at 119 West Maple Street in Deming.
Attendees will be served a meal that includes three different soups, salad, and bread, with each guest receiving a handmade ceramic bowl as part of the event. Tickets are $25 per person and are available at Reader’s Cove Bookstore, Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., online at www.demingsilverlinings.org, or by calling 575-544-2512 and leaving a voicemail if there is no immediate answer.
Margaret Fairman, President of Silver Linings, said the organization currently serves around 130 meals per day to individuals experiencing homelessness in Deming and Luna County. Fairman has worked with Silver Linings for nine years and helped the organization obtain its 501(c)(3) nonprofit status in 2017. She described Silver Linings as a grassroots organization that depends heavily on community support.
Silver Linings operates from 212 South Copper Street and includes a resource center offering services such as showers and assistance, a community meals program serving lunch Monday through Friday, and a thrift store. Proceeds from the thrift store are used to purchase food for meals served to the local community.
Fairman also thanked Mark Schultz and the staff at Peppers Supermarket for allowing Silver Linings to purchase food at reduced prices, helping stretch limited resources.
The handmade bowls for the fundraiser were created by local potters Jeff Cooper and Waldo Winborn, and local quilters donated fabric bowl holders that will also be available.
Adding to the atmosphere, Bravo Mic’s Deming Radio’s John Krehbiel will be at the event providing music from KDEM-FM and KOTS-AM.
Those interested in volunteering with Silver Linings are encouraged to call 575-544-2512 to learn more.
