DEMING — Deming is officially joining the nationwide Gus Macker basketball circuit, as the city prepares to host its first-ever Gus Macker 3-on-3 basketball tournament.

The Gus Macker tournament series began in 1974 in Michigan and has since grown into one of the largest grassroots basketball programs in the country. Events are held in dozens of cities across multiple states each year, drawing hundreds of teams per tournament and thousands of players and spectators nationwide.

The tournaments feature three-on-three basketball played in age- and skill-based divisions, making the event accessible to youth, adults, and recreational players as well as more competitive teams. Gus Macker events are known not only for basketball, but also for their festival-style atmosphere that brings families, visitors, and local businesses together.

Local organizers say hosting a Gus Macker tournament places Deming on the map as part of a nationally recognized sports brand and is expected to bring economic activity and increased visibility to the community.

Team registration is now open through the official Gus Macker website at macker.com. Organizers also note that participation and sponsorship opportunities are available, and community involvement is encouraged.

Chamber officials say the tournament represents a significant opportunity for Deming and are encouraging businesses and residents to get involved as the city prepares for its inaugural event.
