WNMU Regents to Meet March 17; New President Selection and Property Acquisition on Agenda

DEMING – The Western New Mexico University Board of Regents will meet Tuesday, March 17, beginning at 9:00 a.m., with major agenda items including the possible acquisition of a former elementary school property and final action on selecting the university’s next president.

According to a university media advisory, the meeting will begin with an executive session at 9:00 a.m. in the Serna Conference Room at the WNMU Castorena Building in Silver City. The executive session will include discussion of the potential acquisition of the Sixth Street Elementary School property from Silver Consolidated Schools and limited personnel matters involving final candidates for the university president position.

Following the executive session, the board will reconvene in a regular session at 10:00 a.m. in the J. Cloyd Miller Library, which will also be available to watch through a livestream.

During the regular meeting, regents will handle routine items including approval of the agenda and minutes from previous meetings held January 29 and March 5.

Two major items are scheduled under new business. Regents will consider possible action regarding the acquisition of the Sixth Street Elementary School property, with Interim President Dr. Chris Maples presenting the item. The board is also expected to take final action on the selection of a new university president and review the terms of that individual’s contract.

Members of the public may provide comments during the meeting. Those wishing to participate virtually must contact the Office of the President by noon on Monday, March 16, by calling 575-538-6238 or emailing [email protected].

The meeting will take place at Western New Mexico University, 1000 West College Avenue in Silver City. A recording of the meeting will also be posted later on the university’s Board of Regents video archive page.
