DEMING – Gardeners and farmers in Deming and across Luna County may be able to begin planting earlier than usual this spring, according to new frost outlook information released by The Old Farmer’s Almanac.
According to the frost forecast map published at Almanac.com/Frost-2026, the Deming area falls within the green zone, meaning the region is expected to experience its final spring frost earlier than normal this year.
The color-coded map shows frost timing across the United States, with green areas indicating locations where the last frost is expected to arrive earlier than average. In practical terms, that could allow gardeners and growers in Luna County to begin planting up to two weeks earlier than usual.
“In spring, even small shifts in frost timing can have an outsized impact,” said Catherine Boeckmann, executive digital editor of The Old Farmer’s Almanac. “This map adds focused insight around one of the season’s most consequential thresholds.”
For home gardeners, farmers, and landscapers in the Deming area, the earlier frost outlook could open the door to starting vegetables, flowers, and other spring plantings sooner than normal, provided no unexpected cold snaps occur.
While the map was created with gardeners in mind, officials say the information is also useful for farmers, nursery operators, beekeepers, and others whose early spring work depends on freezing temperatures.
