DEMING – Interim Police Chief Jose “Pepe” Montoya officially addressed the public, clarifying that Deming is not without a Chief of Police. In a letter dated May 24th, Montoya emphasized that “Interim Police Chief” is merely a title, underscoring that he holds all the qualifications, responsibilities, and abilities of an appointed Chief of Police.
Montoya highlighted that the appointment of the permanent Chief of Police is a decision for the governing body, but this in no way affects the department’s daily operations or the quality of law enforcement services provided to the community. He assured residents that the police department will continue to deliver professional policing.
In an interview with Deming Radio News, Montoya shared his deep roots in the department, having started his career 18 years ago. Now a father of five, Montoya proudly noted that three of his children serve in the United States Military, while one is still attending Deming High School.
Throughout his career, Montoya has held every ranking position within the department and has completed several executive leadership courses. His extensive experience and training support his current role as Interim Chief. Montoya reassured the public that until the Mayor and City Council finalize their decision on the official Chief of Police, the department remains committed to maintaining the high standards of service expected by the city.
